Removal of Extraneous Material

"Effective measures shall be taken to protect against the inclusion of metal or other extraneous material. Compliance with this requirement may be accomplished by using sieves, traps, magnets, electronic metal detectors or other suitable effective means." CFR 21, 110.80

Strainers and sieves remove large pieces of visible extraneous matter from the process stream. Pieces of metal, wood, gasket and other debris which could create a hazard to the consumer or cause damage to equipment are retained. Strainers are used when the product contains desirable solids which would be removed by finer filtration or when the viscosity of the product makes finer filtration impractical.
Filters which remove extraneous material to 25 microns in diameter are used to enhance the appearance or clarity of fluid products. Small particles of stone, metal and other hazardous foreign material are also retained.
