Foot-Borne Contaminants

Plant buildings must be “constructed in such a manner that floors, walls and ceilings may be adequately cleaned and kept clean ...” CFR 21, Part 110.2.

In a wet processing environment aerosols may be produced when water strikes the floor. These droplets will carry micro-organisms — if present — throughout the production area. Personnel footwear is a primary vector for undesirable microorganisms from unsanitary locations.

Mats are used at entrances to remove soil, which can contain microorganisms. Certain specialty mats can also disinfect footwear surfaces.

• Disinfectant Mats clean and sanitize to prevent cross-contamination.
• Specialty mats feature unique traits that also provide protection.

Boot cleaners and sprayers remove soil from all surfaces of the boot. Use these when layers of material block sanitizer contact.

• Boot and shoe brushes remove heavy soil from soles prior to sanitizing them.
• Boot washes spray water and/or sanitizers to clean boots.
• Doorway Sprayers and Foamers apply sanitizers with either a spray or foam solution.

Sanitary Boots, are preferred for production personnel because they are designed to be easily cleaned and sanitized.

• Nitrile Boots resist harsh sanitizing chemicals.
• Neoprene Boots give the best resistance to fats, oil and chemicals.

Shoe covers permit personnel in "street shoes" to enter production areas. They are also used when inspecting vats, tanks, silos and other sanitary equipment.

• Disposable shoe and boot covers are economical and intended for limited use.
